More donations needed for holiday season

Frederick, MD - The mission of the Frederick Community Action Agency is "to administer programs and services to assist disadvantaged and low-income people, thereby, ameliorating the causes and effects of poverty."  Like those they serve, the Community Action Agency understands what it means to depend on the generosity of others.  The Agency is dependent on local residents and businesses, such as Dan Ryan Builders, to help keep their mission alive and well.

Recently, Dan Ryan Builders challenged their employees, subcontractors, and vendors to collect and donate goods to the Community Action Food Bank.  The response was overwhelming!  Dan Ryan collected hundreds of canned vegetables, meats, and fruits as well as boxes upon boxes of pasta, jars of sauces and baby foods.  In addition, hundreds of diapers, cans of formula and rolls of toilet paper were donated.   Area vendors dropped off cases and cases of food up until the final day of the drive.  Two pick up trucks and two SUV's carried all the food over to the Food Bank on Monday.  "We are trying to make the food drive an annual event, since it went over incredibly well!" stated Kate Anderson, Customer Service Coordinator for Dan Ryan Builders.

The Food Bank is in need of non-perishable items such as cereal, pasta, canned meat, tuna, fruit, spaghetti sauce, canned soups, and canned vegetables.  For Thanksgiving, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie mix are needed. "This is the perfect time of year for donations.  Our donations are down after the food drives from the summer concert series in Baker Park are over," stated Coordinator Marty Qually.  "People forget that hunger is year round.  Most people donate during the Holidays beginning in November. We encourage people to schedule their food drives for the summer and early fall, when our food supplies always run low."

The Frederick Community Action Agency is located at 100 South market Street in Frederick.  For more information or to discuss volunteer opportunities, call 301-360-3966.
